The faithful of Kawuku-based Adoration Chapel gathered at the church premises yesterday to commemorate the Way of the Cross, a procession that reenacts Jesus Christ’s journey to Calvary. The congregation, led by Fr. Emmanuel Ssemambo, observed 14 stations, reflecting on Christ’s crucifixion and sacrifice.
As they walked around Kawuku village, the community joined in, meditating on the significance of Jesus’ journey. “The significance of the Way of the Cross is to encourage people that we need to be in this world, knowing that there will be difficulties and problems to face,” said Fr. Gerald Mpanju, Parish Priest of Bugonga Catholic Church.
Christians say, this is the time for everyone to put everything to a halt and endure a journey of faith in memory of Jesus’ Journey to Calvary.
The procession concluded with a mass, where Catholics venerated the cross and received Holy Communion. According to Catholic tradition, Good Friday is a day of penance and abstinence from meat, commemorating Jesus’ sacrifice.
The Way of the Cross is an essential part of Good Friday celebrations, reminding Catholics to carry their own crosses in life, just as Jesus Christ carried his cross to Calvary. This annual event promotes reflection, peace, and reconciliation among Christians.
In a similar event in Jerusalem, around 1,000 Christian youth walked Via Dolorosa, praying for peace and reflecting on the significance of the Way of the Cross. The event, organized by the Custody of the Holy Land, aims to promote peace and reconciliation in the region.
