The territorial traffic police in Masaka has registered a fatal accident that claimed lives of atleast 9 people leaving 12 others severely injured.
The accident happened at arround 7pm, yesterday, 28th December 2022 at Kaganda towards Kyojja swamp along Masaka – Mbarara highway in Lwengo district.
According to ASP Faridah Nampiima, the Uganda Police Traffic and Road Safety PRO, A Mercedes Benz Actros trailer Registration number RAF 168S/RL 1426 from Masaka heading to Mbarara had a rear tyre bust, lost control and crossed over to the opposite lane ramming into a Toyota Hiace Registration number UBJ 084N and a Mark II Grand UAP 126A which were moving in the opposite direction. The impact left 9 people dead and 12 in critical condition.
” Our Fire and Rescue services personnel are at the scene to remove bodies as some remain stuck in the wreckage, the injured victims have been rushed to Masaka hospital for first aid. One is in critical condition,” said ASP Faridah Nampiima adding that
“The team is on ground as we try to ascertain the cause of the tyre bust that led to the accident. Details of the deceased persons and the injured will be shared in due course.”
During a press conference yesterday, ASP Faridah Nampiima reported a total of 55 deaths, 212 serious injuries and 206 road crashes between 23-26th December 2022. The major cause of the accidents was reckless driving and pedestrians accounted for the highest number of people killed at 38.18%.
The number of fatalities on Ugandan roads remain increasingly high with 4,159 reported in the Uganda Police Annual Crime Report-2021.
