Buhweju County Member of Parliament, Francis Mwijukye, was attacked and injured on Sunday, May 12, 2024, while intervening in a land dispute in Rwanyambare village, Nyakishana sub-county, Buhweju district.

The MP was addressing area residents at Rwanyamabare Catholic Church when a group of alleged land grabbers attacked him. The residents had accused their neighbor, Edwin Burimbare, of encroaching on their land, and Mwijukye was attempting to mediate the situation.

During the scuffle, Mwijukye sustained head injuries after being hit with stones and is currently admitted at Mbarara Hospital for treatment. Seven others, including Vision Group journalist Juliet Kyarisiima, attached to TV West, were also injured in the altercation.

Police responded swiftly to the incident, evacuating Mwijukye from the scene and has mounted an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the attack.

Authorities say, Buhweju has lately face challenges related to land ownership and disputes.
