The Nkumba University Acholi Students Association held a handover ceremony at Viva Hostel Gardens in Nkumba on Saturday, May 10, welcoming their new cabinet. Over 200 students attended the event, where the new executives took oaths of office to serve the association for the next year.
The power transition saw Oryem Vincent take over as President from Langoya Alfred, while Lanyero Joyce Paul became the new Vice President, succeeding Lamwaka Alice Justine. Kilama Tonny handed over the Speakership to Achan Fortunate Leah.
Lamwaka Alice Justine, the outgoing Vice President, welcomed members to the event and highlighted the achievements of their term, including participating in the Acholi Students Inter-Varsity Gala 2024 and acquiring a stamp for official duties. However, she noted a low turnout towards the association’s activities and urged members to comply to take the association to greater heights.
The new President, Oryem Vincent, thanked the outgoing leaders for their diligence in service and commended them for the unity evident amongst members. He appealed to the rest of the Acholi students to subscribe to the association for shared benefits, including tuition financing loans for struggling students.
Mawanda Derick, Nkumba University’s Guild President and Guest of Honor, congratulated the association for the milestone achieved and pledged support from the Guild government. He encouraged members to interest themselves in the association and not keep ideas to themselves for its growth.
The gathering witnessed a transfer of instruments of power from the outgoing to the incoming leaders, symbolizing continuity of governance and cooperation. The new cabinet, with a significant number of first-year students, hopes to build on their predecessors’ achievements and welcome more students into the association.
As the new leadership starts their one-year term, they aim to deliver effective service and uphold the association’s commitment to unity and progress. The Acholi students community looks forward to seeing the association thrive under the new leadership.
