The Inter-University Council of East Africa (IUCEA) was at Nkumba University today 20th March 2024 to benchmark the Institution’s internal Quality Assurance System.
Led by the IUCEA Executive Secretary, Prof. Gaspard Banyankimbona, the delegation also included IUCEA Cohort (V), and a team from the National Council for Higher Education – Uganda.
Quality Assurance Director, Mr. Francis Ssengendo presented on Internal Quality Assurance Systems of Nkumba University.
According to Mr. Ssegendo, the Quality Assurance Directorate monitors the teaching and learning processes in the University using an electronic monitoring system called ‘Tredumo’, this caught the attention of the delegation.
“The system uses sophisticated smart card technology to monitor students’ and lecturers’ attendance, examinations, and tuition payment status,” adds Mr. Ssegendo.
Prof. Gaspard Banyankimbona commended Nkumba University management for this technological milestone, “I take this opportunity to congratulate the management of Nkumba University especially the Vice Chancellor, Pro. Jude Lubega for championing the use of ICT in Quality Assurance.”
Prof. Micheal Mawa, the Head of the Quality Assurance and Qualifications Framework Unit at the Inter-University Council for East Africa (IUCEA) expressed gratitude for the Directorate’s ability to deliver the most crucial part of the delegation’s findings in just 1 hour, “I am glad that what we have been doing in 2 days, you have summarized in 1 hour, thank you.”
The Inter-University Council for East Africa (IUCEA) is a strategic institution of the East African Community responsible for coordinating the development of higher education and research in the region.
Since the re-establishment of EAC in 1999, IUCEA assumed a broader role as a building block for the achievement of sustainable socio-economic development and regional integration of the EAC region.
The Treaty for the Establishment of EAC stipulates the call for Partner States to harmonize their education and training systems to provide for, among others, concerted efforts in the development of human resources, and mobility of people, labour, services, and further, the harmonization of higher education mandate as clearly articulated in the IUCEA Protocol 2002 and the IUCEA Act 2009.
Currently IUCEA comprises more than 130 universities, colleges, and other public and private degree-awarding institutions within the EAC with the vision of becoming the leading EAC Institution for a prosperous and sustainable East African Community.
