Nkumba University’s Team immerged winners during the social fiction competitions for all Universities in central Uganda held on 2nd March 2023 at Kampala International University-Kansanga campus.
The competition which was pitched on the theme, ‘How Do You Want The Youth Of 2050 To Live His/Her Life?’ reqired teams to think about echo friendly business ideas and present them in a more appealing entrepreneural aspect.
Participants were selected from close to 10 universities including; Makerere, Nkumba, Cavendish, Kyambogo, IUIU and the hosts, Kampala International University amongothers.
Nkumba University was represented by; Kwarisiima Faith, Grace Nalugo, Nsozi Heather, Nvule Raymond and their team leader, Makanga Jessy.
The 5 presented before a panel of judges their project code named ‘Green land initiative’ based on the environmentally Hazzardous activities at kasenyi landing site.
Their prolific display of ideas tailored on waste management were convincingly enough to earn them the utmost attention from the judges who declared them winners of the 2 million Ugandan shillings cash prize.
Makerere University Business School ‘s team guided their institution to the second position with their ‘Youth With A Vision Africa Initiative’ bagging a whooping 1.5 million Shillings cash prize.
Makanga Jessy, the Nkumba University’s team leader noted with profoundness that it was imminently the entire team’s rigorous efforts to think outside the box and deliver the best before the judges. “We owe it to team work, having executed this well, I want to see if we can push for memorandum of Understanding with the University and draw plans on how best we can implement this initiative. ” SaidMakanga.
Makanga believes that if duly implemented, project will help youth with opportunities to add a block on the fight against global warming and also solve dilemas of environmental degradation through innovative skills that are geared towards waste recycling, reusability and profitability.
The competition was a social business design organised by the You Youth foundation and partners with dedication to the concept of social business as tailored by Nobel Peace Prize winner, Professor Muhammad Yunus through promoting the 3 zeros. which inciude,0 unemployment,0 poverty and 0 cabon emission .
In his message Professor Yunus encouraged young people to become social business entrepreneurs and contribute to the well-being of their communities and the world at large, “rather than just making money, think of how you can impact your community and the world, Making money is no fun but contributing to and changing the world is a lot more fun.” Noted professor Muhammad Yunus.
The project is trajected Under ‘Ebizibu Bugaga’ program, literally referring to ‘problems are wealth’ which is a one year pilot project spearheaded by Kampala International University aimed at addressing both social and environmental concerns through awareness, skilling and supporting Ugandan youths in coming up with echo friendly business ideas that can benefit their communities and the world.
