Nkumba University volleyball teams met with the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Jude Lubega, and the University Secretary, Mr. Francis Ssengendo, to celebrate a successful season and discuss the way forward.
The closed-door meeting, which took place at the Vice Chancellor’s Boardroom, was led by the University Sports Tutor, Mr. Joseph Muyiira, who presented a comprehensive wrap-up of the just-concluded volleyball league. Mr. Muyiira intimated that the boys’ volleyball team dominated the season, winning every single match in both legs of the league, only to lose in the final game. With all the triumph, challenges such as inadequate equipment and poor playing grounds still loom.
“I’m proud to say we won all our games, both home and away, except one against Christian High School. Our hope is to advance to Serie A in the upcoming season.” Said Oboke Wilson, the Male Volleyball Team Captain.
Despite the success, Oboke was quick to point out persistent gaps: “Our main challenges are the lack of enough equipment, balls, nets, and the state of our court, which needs renovation. We discussed these with the Vice Chancellor, and they promised to find strategies to improve the situation before the next season kicks off.”
Charity Kabugho Elizabeth, the Female Volleyball Team Captain, acknowledged the institution’s unwavering support over the years. “I benefit a lot from the university,” she said. “They sponsor our academics, give us accommodation, and provide meals, especially when we travel for games. This support makes us feel recognized and valued.”
The University Vice Chancellor commended the teams for their relentless efforts and assured them that management is fully taking note of their dedication and commitment. “We see every effort you put into the sport, and as management, we are ready to walk with you every step of the way.” Said Prof. Jude Lubega.
The meeting also served as a ceremonial handover of medals and certificates to the players, symbolizing unmatched triumph.
In his remarks, the university’s Sports Tutor, Mr. Joseph Muyiira, painted a broader picture of Nkumba’s sporting landscape, describing a mix of struggle, perseverance, and triumph.
“We’ve witnessed tremendous success,” he said. “Take the volleyball teams for example. Rebuilding was not easy after most of our senior players graduated. We had to scout and train afresh, especially for the ladies’ team, which started from zero. But today, we are becoming one of the strongest sides in the country.”
He also highlighted achievements in other disciplines. “Our soccer team represented Uganda in Lagos after winning the national inter-university championship. Though they fell short in the quarter-finals this season, they remain a formidable force. Players from our volleyball teams were also selected for the national team and represented Uganda in Tanzania and South Africa.”
“Nkumba is now one of the few universities where students can balance academics and professional sports,” he added. “Our players attend classes during the day, train in the evening, and many go on to excel even after graduation.”
Mr. Muyiira did not shy away from the need for more investment. “Yes, the university management has done a lot, especially in providing finances, equipment, meals, and transport. But we still need better sports facilities, grounds that are friendly for both training and competitive matches.”
Adding that, “I want to call upon all parents and sponsors to entrust us with their talented sons and daughters. We are not just training athletes, we are building careers and producing graduates who can compete nationally and globally.”
As Nkumba University rallies to strengthen its sporting programs, the players and coaches remain hopeful that with continued investment and community support, the institution can cement its place as a powerhouse of university sports in Uganda and beyond.
