In a thrilling display of rugby prowess, the Stanbic Black Pirates emerged victorious once again, lifting the Kitgum Sevens title in a resounding fashion.
This triumph comes on the heels of their earlier victory at the Stone City Sevens, firmly establishing them as the team to beat in the Nile Special Sevens Championship.
The final match at the BOMA Grounds was a one-sided affair, as Marvin Odongo’s charges decimated the Jinja Hippos with a comprehensive 24-00 win.
The Black Pirates showcased their attacking prowess with tries from Mubarak Wandera, Sidney Gongodyo, Timothy Kisiga, and Arnold Atukunda, leaving no doubt about their superiority on the day.
Before the final, Pirates had already demonstrated their dominance by brushing aside the Platinum Credit Heathens in another lopsided encounter, which ended with a convincing 24-07 scoreline in their favor.
The Bweyogerere-based side faced a tougher challenge in the tournament’s first quarter-final against Makerere Impis. With the match deadlocked at 12-12, team captain Isaac Massa made a decisive impact, touching down for the Pirates in sudden death to secure a hard-fought 17-12 victory.
Meanwhile, the Kobs, who had suffered defeat at the hands of the Hippos in the quarter-finals, redeemed themselves by defeating the Heathens to claim the third-place spot. Brian Makalama’s troops triumphed in the bronze game with a 24-14 victory.
In the women’s category, the Black Pearls showcased their talent and determination, emerging as champions after a commanding 21-05 win over the Thunderbirds in the final.
The Pirates’ triumph in the Kitgum Sevens not only adds another trophy to their collection but also solidifies their position at the top of the title race, amassing valuable maximum points. With their exceptional performances in consecutive circuits, the Stanbic Black Pirates have set the bar high for their competitors, leaving no doubt about their championship aspirations.
