Deputy University Secretary Urges New Guild Leaders to Build a Lasting Legacy

Madam Martha Luyirika, Deputy University Secretary, challenged the newly installed Guild student leaders to build a legacy that reflects their values and actions. She made this appeal during the induction ceremony for new Guild leaders at Mpaga Library today May 17, 2024.

While expounding on the topic “Governance of Nkumba University: Fitting in as a Student Leader,” Madam Martha emphasized the importance of understanding the principles and regulations governing the University and encouraged the leaders to build their legacy by arming themselves with “the Guild Financial Regulations and plan strategically for the benefit of the student’s community.”

“What you do is what you will be remembered for, do everything within your powers to benefit your repute.” She added.

The induction session featured various speakers from the university’s management and staff, addressing topics such as; Guild Organs and their functions, Management of leadership as a student leader, Teamwork and team building, Leadership and management of peer pressure, Governance of Nkumba University: Fitting in as a Student Leader, The Role of Student Leaders in Conflict Management, The Guild Constitution of Nkumba University, Management of Guild Finances, Ethics and Integrity of a Student Leader, Co-curricular activities, Responsibilities of an Alumni, Essentials of planning Guild Functions.

Dr. Sulaiman Bbosa, speaking on conflict management, advised the new leaders to seek guidance and initiate dialogue to resolve difficult situations. , “There will be times when you disagree as leaders, please, always comprehend and reflect on the situations at hand, initiate dialogue by allowing aggrieved parties to share their discontentment, assess options, and seek guidance from appropriate authorities before acting.”

CPA Patrick Oleja, the University Bursar, emphasized the importance of understanding the environment and learning negotiation skills for a smooth tenure.

The Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Jude Lubega, closed the ceremony by commending the previous government for maintaining peace and harmony between the University and the Guild Leadership. He encouraged the new leaders to engage in constructive dialogue and showcase the university’s strengths to prospective students.

“Other Governments have gone and you have seen how smooth it has been, and this is all because of engaging, let’s engage even when things have completely failed.”

“As guild leaders, you hold significant power when it comes to influencing prospective students, share your positive experiences, and showcasing our university’s strengths. Encourage others to choose our institution by highlighting our academic excellence, research opportunities, and vibrant campus life.”

The newly inducted Guild leaders, elected in April, will serve until May next year.

Nashonji Simon Peter is a dynamic and multi-faceted team leader, renowned for his exceptional interpersonal skills. Having graduated with a Diploma in Journalism, Nashonji is on the cusp of completing his Bachelor of Science in Journalism and Public Relations at Nkumba University. He picked his niche and started writing with Chimp Reports in 2018. Since then, he has authored and published over 500 articles that cover Business trends, Politics, Health, Sports, and Environment. To master his craft, Nashonji offered to volunteer as an Editor of Nkumba University's News Website in 2022, a position he has held to date. On 1st July 2023, He joined the Editorial team of Ubuntu’ Magazine, a Rotary District 9214 (Uganda and Tazania) Monthly News product. Beyond the realm of academia, Nashonji is deeply involved in the governance of Airforce Senior Secondary School his Alma Mata, where he serves as a member on the Board of Directors. He is currently, the President Airforce S.S.S Alumni Society, President Samia Student's Association of Nkumba University and at the same time President of the Media Challenge Fellowship, 2023 cohort. "Opportunities multiply as they are seized and only dwindle when neglected."
