Nkumba University Guild presidential aspirant Alinda Marvin has trimmed off his signature dreadlocks, sparking mixed reactions among students. The decision comes as Marvin seeks to win over voters in the upcoming guild elections, an ambition that seemed to have been obscured by his Rastafarian look.
According to Marvin’s campaign team, the move was strategic, aiming to make him look more appealing. “We want to show students that Alinda is willing to listen and adapt,” says Ayebazibwe Brinton, a member of Marvin’s campaign team.
However, in an interview with Marvin, he said that trimming off his hair was a gesture to show how exemplary he can be, listen to his voters, and adapt to new ways. ” For me to be able to deliver, I need to be flexible. I want to work with the student for not only their well-being but also their image,” said Alinda.
The decision to cut off his dreadlocks was made just before the guild aspirant debate organized by the electoral commission. Marvin sat in front of the guild cafe and had his dreadlocks trimmed off, a move that sparked debate questioning the move.
Students are divided, with some praising Marvin’s willingness to evolve, while others question whether this change reflects his true character. “It’s a bold move, but we’ll see if it pays off,” said one student.
With elections set for 26th April, Marvin’s bold move has certainly put him in the spotlight as students weigh their options. Marvin’s decision will likely be a topic of discussion in the coming days.
Marvin’s campaign team is hopeful that the move will help him connect with more students and showcase his willingness to listen and adapt.
