Nkumba University’s TS1 hall was packed to the brim with students eager to witness the much-anticipated Guild Presidency internal debate as three aspirants, Katende Muhammad, Mawanda Derick, and Alinda Marvin, struggled to employ their oratory skills to earn presidential bid support.
The moderator took the stage, welcomed the audience, and outlined the debate’s rules. The aspirants took turns presenting their visions for the student guild, with Katende Muhammad focusing on student welfare, mentorship programs, and campus infrastructure development.
“As your guild president, I promise to prioritize student welfare and create a supportive environment for all students,” Katende said. “We’ll work tirelessly to improve campus facilities, including libraries and recreational areas.”
Mawanda Derick emphasized academic excellence, promising to strengthen research initiatives and improve lecturer-student ratios. “We need to prioritize academic excellence and provide students with the resources they need to succeed,” Mawanda said. “I will work to strengthen research initiatives and improve lecturer-student ratios to ensure students receive the best education possible.”
Alinda Marvin emphasized the need for accountability and transparency with little to unveil in regards to his manifesto.
The debate heated up as the aspirants tackled tough questions. On student welfare, Katende advocated for dialogue and initiating the interschool council to build rigor on consensus, while Mawanda proposed strengthening student organizations to promote leadership skills. Alinda reechoed the need for fair representation, a thing he certainly stands for.
When asked about their plans for campus life, Mawanda highlighted his experience in organizing events and promised to increase funding for student activities. Alinda focused on creating safe spaces for students to express themselves, while Katende promised to improve campus facilities.
The final question hung in the air: “What sets you apart from the other candidates?” Katende spoke of his extensive experience in student leadership, while Mawanda highlighted his academic achievements and dedication to student mentorship. Alinda emphasized his fresh perspective and commitment to listening to students’ concerns.
As the debate concluded, the audience applauded, impressed by the aspirants’ passion and conviction. The students left with a clearer understanding of each candidate’s vision, and the stage was set for a fiercely contested election.
The debate showcased the aspirants’ unique strengths and weaknesses, giving students a chance to make informed decisions about their future leaders. The guild presidential election is approaching, and students will be looking for a leader who can deliver on their promises.
