On April 1, 2025, Uganda Uncovered, a Destination Marketing Organization, conducted a Travel Writing training for Journalism and Public Relations students at Nkumba University. The training, themed “Unlock the Power of Travel Writing and Elevate Your Digital Marketing Skills,” aimed to equip students with the skills to craft engaging travel stories.
Julius Luwemba, a travel writer, emphasized the importance of travel writing, citing Spencer Church Hill’s book “My African Journey,” which describes Uganda as a “fairy tale.” Luwemba encouraged students to travel, discover, and experience new things to write compelling stories.
“Travel writers are tourists who go on adventures to discover unique things that give them an angle to write stories that appeal to the public,” Luwemba said. He stressed that travel writing is not just about writing, but also about experiencing and researching.
Luwemba advised students to focus on discovering uniqueness, as “people have written almost about everything, so you must stand out and find something new.” Jona Katende, an IT technician, added that while Artificial Intelligence (AI) can generate stories, it is not suitable for journalists, as AI-generated stories can be detected with advancing technology.
Katende encouraged students to capture moments from their adventures using AI cameras, as photos can tell a story and inspire readers. He also urged students to create YouTube channels to market their stories and become inspirational travel writers.
The training aimed to empower students with the skills to craft compelling travel stories and elevate their digital marketing skills.
