The Inter-University Fashion Challenge is back, bigger and more exciting than ever. Scheduled for August 29th, 2026. The second edition of this highly anticipated event promises to elevate student creativity, collaboration, and innovation within the fashion and design space. Following the remarkable success of the inaugural challenge held on August 15th, 2025, the demand for another season has been undeniable. Students have called for it, institutions are eager to participate, and the stage is set for an even more impactful showcase of talent.
The first edition of the challenge proved to be more than just a competition it was a movement that highlighted the immense potential within Uganda’s fashion schools. Students from various universities demonstrated not only technical skill but also the ability to tell stories through fabric, design, and presentation. Among the standout institutions was Kyambogo University, whose students captivated audiences and judges alike. Their collection seamlessly blended ancient inspirations with modern-day relevance, creating pieces that were both culturally grounded and fashion-forward.

One of the most memorable highlights of the 2025 challenge was the emergence of Angella Niyingena from the Michellangelo School of Creative Art and Design as the overall top student designer. Her winning piece, created under the “Urban vs Ghetto” category, was a striking outfit upcycled from worn denim. It perfectly captured the contrast between two worlds while maintaining a cohesive and innovative aesthetic. Similarly, Derick Kwikiriza, a student from University of Kisubi stood out in the Eco-Fashion category with an extraordinary design made from recycled car tyres, proving that sustainability and creativity can go hand in hand. Additionally, the use of bark cloth by several participants emphasized the importance of preserving cultural heritage through fashion.
As the second edition approaches, expectations are even higher. The Inter-University Fashion Challenge continues to serve as a vital platform for students to gain exposure, collaborate across institutions, and prepare for the professional fashion industry. Fashion schools are known to produce some of the most talented designers, yet opportunities for real-world exposure and collaboration are often limited. This challenge bridges that gap by offering students a stage to showcase their work to a broader audience while also connecting them with industry opportunities.
Participation in the challenge is structured to encourage teamwork and diversity of ideas. Each participating university or college is required to register a team of six students. Each student will design one fashion product based on a selected category, ensuring that every team is represented across all categories. This structure not only fosters collaboration but also ensures a comprehensive presentation of ideas and skills.

To participate, each student contributes a total fee of UGX 75,000, which covers the participation fee, lunch during the event, and official event merchandise. Beyond the financial commitment, participants are investing in an experience that offers both personal and professional growth.
The competition features a range of thoughtfully curated design categories, each challenging students to explore different aspects of fashion:
- Heritage – In this category, designers will Blend traditional elements with contemporary fashion to showcase the enduring power of culture. The fabrics used may include traditional cotton, backcloth, sisal, and raffia among other local and traditional fabrics to design their collections.
- Modernity: In this category, designers will showcase the beauty of cultural exchange through designs that seamlessly blend influences from around the world.
- Eco-Fashion: In this category, designers will demonstrate fashion’s sustainable and environmentally friendly potential. The materials used may be Recycled materials (Upcycling using second-hand clothes), organic fabrics, and minimalist designs
- Inclusive Fashion: Inclusion of everyone regardless of their sex, size, or body shape is encouraged in fashion. Under this category, designers will design products that celebrate diversity and individuality through fashion. Factors to consider will be Inclusive sizing, unconventional beauty standards, and empowering silhouettes.
- Urban Vs Ghetto. Capturing the energy and diversity of urban life vs the Ghetto life. Here, designers will use the same piece of fabric to contrast what people in urban life wear with what people in the ghetto wear. They will showcase items including, Streetwear, athleisure, and bold accessories.
- Color Your World. Here, we want students to be as creative as they can, producing their own fabrics in colors and prints inspired by their creativity. Additionally, the “Color Your World” concept pushes creativity even further by allowing students to develop their own fabrics, experimenting with unique colors and prints inspired by their imagination.
- The “Accessories Design” category invites students to create functional, wearable art that complements and elevates their garments. Participants are challenged to conceptualize and craft pieces—ranging from jewelry and handbags to footwear and headwear—that reflect their personal aesthetic and technical skill.

How to apply
The application process is straightforward. Eligible participants MUST be students in universities or institutions offering fashion, art, or design programs. Interested students are required to form teams of six, with each member selecting a category. Each participant must complete the application form individually to confirm their involvement.
Once selected, participants will undergo a virtual orientation session where organizers will provide detailed guidance on the competition. To further enrich the experience, participants will also take part in a fashion exposure trip, visiting selected fashion and art businesses. This initiative is designed to inspire creativity and provide practical insights before they begin working on their designs.
The challenge is not only about competition but also about recognition and opportunity. Awards include the prestigious title of Best Team and recognition for the Best Student Designer. All participants will receive certificates, and standout individuals may gain access to mentorship, internship, and employment opportunities within the fashion industry.
The structure of the competition ensures both individual and collective excellence.
