The United States Embassy in Uganda has issued a fresh security reminder to its citizens following growing press reports of increased crime incidents across the country, particularly in the capital, Kampala, urging heightened personal vigilance and precautionary measures.
In a public advisory released this week, the Embassy cautioned that crime, including violent incidents, can occur anywhere in Uganda and at any time of day, emphasizing the need for individuals and families to prioritize personal security in their daily routines.
“Crime, including violent crime, can happen throughout Uganda at any time of the day. Personal security should always be on your mind,” the Embassy notes in a press statement ,underscoring concerns that have increasingly dominated public discourse amid reports of urban thefts, assaults, and targeted robberies.
The advisory outlines several best practices aimed at reducing vulnerability, encouraging citizens to avoid walking or running alone and instead travel with companions or use vehicles where possible. Extra caution is advised during night and early morning hours, periods often associated with heightened security risks.
The Embassy further warned against openly carrying valuables, urging residents to keep mobile phones and essential items concealed from public view and to limit possessions to only what is necessary. “Remain aware of your surroundings at all times, head up, eyes observing activities around you,” the advisory states, encouraging individuals to appear alert and avoid becoming easy targets for criminals.
Citizens were also encouraged to trust their instincts, change direction or leave areas where suspicious activity is observed, and remain cautious of distractions commonly used by organized criminal groups.
Additional recommendations include avoiding demonstrations and crowded places, keeping doors and windows securely locked, varying travel routes and schedules, and maintaining an emergency communication plan for both family and workplace contacts.
The Embassy also urged U.S. nationals to regularly review guidance issued by the United States Department of State through its travel advisory system for Uganda.
The advisory comes at a time when concerns about urban safety have gained renewed attention in Uganda’s major towns. Security analysts say such reminders are not uncommon and often reflect broader global diplomatic practice aimed at ensuring citizens abroad remain informed about potential risks.
Uganda has historically been regarded as relatively stable within the region, particularly following security reforms implemented after periods of political instability in the 1970s and early 1980s. Over the past two decades, authorities have invested in community policing initiatives and surveillance measures to curb urban crime, especially in fast-growing cities like Kampala.
However, rapid urbanization, unemployment pressures, and expanding metropolitan populations have continued to present challenges for law enforcement agencies.
Security experts note that while government agencies play a central role in maintaining law and order, personal awareness remains a critical layer of protection.
