Alionzi Lawrence alias Dangote has extended National Unity Platform’s -NUP tight grasp on Makerere’s top most office after edging 7 other candidates to win the 2022 Guild presidential race.

yesterday’s electronic elections saw the 3rd year Electrical Engineering student garner a whooping 54.16% of the total votes cast representing 5,839 votes.

Makerere University’s president-elect took it to Twitter for an early celebration, “A single orphan to a peasant mother is now the 88th Guild President of the region’s most prestigious university; what better definition for ‘A Hill of Endless Possibilities’? God did, he always does Thank you, Gallant Makerereans and NUP.”

National Resistance Movement’s Hussein Ibra trailed in second with 14.94% equivalent to 2,079 votes. Hussein who is also the Jinja City youth councillor had pledged to scrap the 15% tuition increment and revamp halls of residence during an Open air campaign on Tuesday, 29th November, a campaign kerygma that did not work well for him.

The other six candidates faired insignificantly leaving Dangote’s land-slide victory intact. Third placed Justus Tukamushaba got 1,758 as Blessious Namirembe came in 4th with 359.

Carlton Muyinda, Ronald Mugisha, Edward Nalwangu and Honesty Natumanya polled 238, 106, 37 and 24 respectively. 10,440 students participated in this year’s elections.

Prominent NUP leaders have already conveyed their congratulatory messages to Makerere University’s new Fountain of honour.

“Gallant Makerereans! Allow me, to allow you, to allow us, to Thank you for voting @LAlionzi as the 88th Guild President for@Makerere Thank you for believing & trusting@NUP_Ug Ee Dangote Oyee, NUP Oyee #PeoplePowerOurPower.” Leader of Opposition Mathias Mpuuga via Twitter.

During a campaign rally on Monday afternoon, the Former Nsibirwa Hall speaker, Alionzi promised to construct another hall for girls, reinstate suspended students, fix missing marks issues, renovation of halls of residence, and increase the allowances of students on Government sponsorship.

Other candidates including Edward Nalwangu, Honesty Natumanya, Ronald Mugisha, Carlton Muyinda, Blessious Namirembe and Justus Tukamushaba had similar pledges with mutual assertions centered on increasing government students’ allowances, having students’ marks uploaded on time, and bridging the gap between the students and the university management.

Alionzi now becomes the 88th Guild President of Makerere University in a historical victory that will see him extend NUP’s stay at Makerere University’s leadership helm preceding from Nambassa shamim, the incumbent who has had an extended time in Office.

Makerere went to the polls yesterday after close to 5 months election suspension. In July, the University council suspended the students guild and indefinitely deferred elections for the university’s 88th guild president after Betungura Bewatte, a student of Uganda Christian University was slit to death during clashes that pitted supporters of the National Unity Platform against Forum for Democratic Change adherents on the last day of the campaigns.
