Brig. Gen. Felix Kulayigye, Uganda People’s Defence Force (UPDF) Spokesperson, has cautioned student leaders on the complexities of globalization, urging them to be aware of its benefits and drawbacks.

Speaking at the ongoing 14-day Higher Institutions of Learning student leaders’ patriotism training at Nkumba University, Brig. Gen. Kulayigye defined globalization as “the emergence of a global society in which economic, political, environmental, and cultural events in one part of the world quickly come to have significance for people in other parts of the world.”

He noted that globalization presents opportunities for Uganda, including technological advancements, increased access to data and information, and more access to capital flows, human capital, cheaper imports, and larger export markets. However, he also highlighted the disadvantages, such as increased income inequalities, cultural uniqueness loss, and job insecurity.

Brig. Gen. Kulayigye emphasized the role of student leaders in addressing the challenges of globalization. “As future leaders, you must be aware of the multifaceted impacts of globalization and promote critical thinking about how it affects local economies, cultures, and societies,” he said.

He urged student leaders to advocate for sustainable development, empower marginalized communities, engage in global dialogues, and foster entrepreneurship and innovation. “You must be the champions of change, promoting a more inclusive and sustainable global economy that focuses on human welfare and environmental preservation,” he added.

The training, which is being held at Nkumba University, is aimed at equipping student leaders with the knowledge and skills necessary to navigate the complexities of globalization and promote patriotism and national development.

Brigadier General Felix Kulayigye is a high-ranking military officer in the Uganda People’s Defence Force (UPDF). He currently serves as the Defence Spokesperson, a position he assumed in February 2022, replacing Brigadier Flavia Byekwaso. This is his second stint as Defence Spokesperson, having previously held the position from 2005 to 2013.

Born in 1964 in Masaka District, Uganda, Kulayigye joined the UPDF in 1989 after completing his Bachelor’s degree in Education from Makerere University. He has had a distinguished military career, serving in various roles, including as a platoon commander in Northern Uganda during the Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA) war.

Kulayigye has also served as the Chief Political Commissar and as a Member of Parliament representing the UPDF in the 10th Parliament from 2016 to 2021. He was promoted to the rank of Brigadier General in February 2019.

As Defence Spokesperson, Kulayigye is responsible for communicating the UPDF’s position on various issues and serving as the link between the military and the public.
