Jackson Ssonko Re-elected President Nkumba University Alumni Association

Jackson Ssonko, the incumbent Nkumba University Alumni Association President has secured his second term in a re-election where he contested unopposed.

Ssonko was re-elected yesterday, 10th February 2024 during the Association’s Annual General Meeting (AGM), held at TS1 amidst both praise and high expectations from the fraternity members.

While delivering his acceptance speech, Ssonko expressed gratitude to the alumni Association for rallying behind him.

He called for unity among former students, emphasizing their collective responsibility in shaping the future of their alma mater.

Ssonko also assured the convocation that his re-election was a result of deliberate effort and commitment, “I am not here by mistake. I worked for this, I love it, and I am here to accomplish a task.” Said Ssonko.

”We are embarking on a journey of rebuilding our institution.”He added.

During his first term, Ssonko led various transformative projects, including the construction of the University Perimeter wall, the paving of walkways, and the restoration of the University signpost at S&S Mall.


He also initiated programs fostering networking, mentorship, and career development, equipping university finalists with essential work readiness skills.

Ssonko now returns for a second term in office determined to build a vibrant alumni network, promote the core values of Nkumba University, and provide support for students’ career development.

Highlighting the plans for the future, Ssonko unveiled the Alumni body’s initiative to construct a four-story hub, valued at 2 billion shillings.

According to Ssonko, the hub will become a Center for Leadership, Entrepreneurship, and Innovation (CLEI) aimed at fostering innovation and growth.


In his address, Nkumba University Vice Chancellor, Professor Jude Lubega, urged unity among the Alumni members, emphasizing its pivotal role in the development of the university. “The Alumni is the core part of our institution, and I am certain when you work in unison, we will move this university to where we want it to be.”

The Academic Registrar, Dr. Frank Pio Kiyingi, who presided over the election, congratulated Ssonko and also echoed the need for unity among alumni members.

Notably, Mr. Kamusiime Samuel retained his position as Vice President, with Nakibinge Matilda elected as General Secretary, Wavamuno Tonny as Publicity Secretary, and Nanyonga Jackline as Treasurer.


Other elected officials will serve in various capacities, including Deputy General Secretary-Nabasumba Juliet, Deputy Publicity Secretary-Walusimbi Kim khasim, and Nakato Pauline as Deputy Treasurer.


Former Guild president Ssebowa Abdallahi Duga (1998-1999) will head the Project and Infrastructural Committee, while Mr. Kabakubya Bashir will lead the legal committee.

The newly elected committee took oath immediately and will serve a three-year term, ending in December 2026.

Briefly About Jackson Ssonko


Jackson Ssonko clinched Nkumba University Alumni Presidency in 2018 serving through to 2023.

He is currently a member of the Rotary Club of Bunga where he has contributed significantly to various humanitarian projects and championed initiatives related to education, healthcare, and sustainable development.

Simon Peter Nashonji

Nashonji Simon Peter is a results-driven leader and versatile communications expert with a proven track record of excellence in journalism, public relations, and team management. He holds a Bachelor's degree in Journalism and Public Relations, a Diploma in Journalism, and a Certificate in Counselling Psychology from Nkumba University. Currently, he is pursuing a Master's degree in Public Relations and Strategic Communication at Nkumba University. Nashonji's journalism career spans over five years. With a notable debut at Chimp Reports in 2018, Nashonji has authored and published over 500 articles on business trends, politics, health, sports, and the environment. To hone his craft, he volunteered as Editor of Nkumba University's News Website in 2022, a position he still holds. In 2023, Nashonji was selected among three students to represent Nkumba University at the year-long 2023 Media Challenge Fellowship, where he served as President of the cohort. Same year, he joined the Editorial team of Ubuntu Magazine, a Rotary District 9214 (Uganda and Tanzania) monthly news product. He is currently the Assistant Public Relations Officer at Nkumba University, President, Airforce S.S.S Alumni Association, and at the same time President, Samia Student's Association of Nkumba University. He is also a member of the Board of Governors at Airforce Senior Secondary School, his alma mater. Prior to his current roles, Nashonji accumulated valuable experience in management, having served as Supervisor at Crane Cafeteria (2019-2021), Restaurant General Manager at Pizza Hut Uganda (2016-2017), and Operations Manager at Corinya (U) Ltd (2010-2015). Nashonji also served as President of the Rotaract Club of Rubaga in the 2014-2015 Rotary year. Under his leadership, the club made a significant contribution of $1,000 to the Rotary Foundation. Still in Rotary circles, he played a key role in the establishment of the Rotaract Club of Entebbe Airport in 2012 and the Rotaract Club of Nkumba Stewards in 2015. A native of Buhauli village-Busia District, Nashonji is driven by the adage, "Opportunities multiply as they are seized and only dwindle when neglected."
