On any ordinary afternoon at Nkumba University, it is easy to notice the usual rhythms of university life, students hurrying to lectures, discussion groups under shaded academic eco-forest, and postgraduate researchers quietly working against publication deadlines.
But behind this routine academic life lies a quiet transformation. Over the last decade, Nkumba University has been steadily investing in something less visible than lecture halls, research culture. Today, that investment is beginning to show results.
New global rankings by EduRank now place Nkumba University 10th among Uganda’s 46 universities, marking a significant milestone in the institution’s academic evolution.
Globally, the university ranks 6,838th and 295th in Africa, based on research output, citations, academic visibility, and alumni influence.
For a university founded just over 30 years ago, education observers say the ranking signals a maturing academic institution finding its research identity.
Founded in 1994 and chartered in 2006, Nkumba University was originally established to help meet Uganda’s growing demand for higher education during the expansion of private universities.
Like many private institutions at the time, its early focus was largely teaching. But recent years have seen a deliberate shift toward research development.
University administrators say the change has involved strengthening postgraduate training, supporting academic publishing, and encouraging staff to pursue doctoral qualifications at almost no cost implication.
Their efforts appear to be yielding results. The EduRank data shows Nkumba has produced about 199 publications and 692 citations, with its strongest academic fields being Liberal Arts, Social Sciences, Law, Political Science and Public Health.
Liberal Arts and Social Sciences alone account for 182 publications and 673 citations, making it the university’s strongest research area.
“Research is becoming the currency of global university competitiveness, and institutions must invest deliberately to remain relevant.” Says Prof. Solomon Muchwa, the Director – Postgraduate Studies and Research at Nkumba University.
The scholars behind the numbers
At the centre of Nkumba’s research growth are individuals whose publications continue to shape the university’s academic profile.
Leading the list is Vice Chancellor Prof. Jude T. Lubega, whose research in ICT for development and e-learning has produced 32 publications and over 1,200 citations.
He is followed by business scholar Prof. Francis Kasekende, whose work in management and human resource development has attracted over 700 citations.
Other notable contributors include biological scientist Prof. Faustino Lataru Orach‑Meza, social psychologist Assoc. Prof. Norman Nsereko, and multidisciplinary researcher Assoc. Prof. Solomon Asiimwe Muchwa.
University officials say the next phase will involve mentoring younger academics to increase research output. “Universities rise on the strength of their researchers, not just their enrolment numbers,” notes Assoc. Prof. Solomon Muchwa.
Despite Nkumba’s progress, Makerere University remains Uganda’s dominant research institution, maintaining its long-established academic influence in the region.
Education regulators say rankings should be viewed as performance mirrors rather than competitions. Dr Vincent Sembatya of the National Council for Higher Education says rankings help universities identify weaknesses. “With such rankings, higher institutions of learning are able to identify areas where they should improve. Although some rankings may emphasise certain indicators, generally they are useful improvement tools,” he said.
He added that research productivity remains one of the most important global ranking indicators.
Government education policy is also pushing universities toward more practical training.
The Minister of Education, Janet Museveni, recently emphasized competence-based education. “Universities must focus on solving real problems, not just knowledge acquisition,” she said, noting that competence-based curricula are expected by 2027.
Education experts say future rankings may increasingly depend on innovation, graduate employability, and research funding partnerships. “Rankings matter, but what matters more is whether universities produce graduates who can solve national problems.” Said Ronald Kalema, Mayor- Katabi Town Council.
Analysts say Nkumba University’s next challenge will be increasing international research collaboration and improving citation impact.
If the current growth trend continues, observers say the university could strengthen its standing among Uganda’s leading private universities.
