The National Resistance Movement (NRM) Secretary General Richard Todwong has challenged student leaders to reject sectarianism, tribalism, and religious divisions, emphasizing that true leadership is about serving the nation without prejudice.
Addressing student leaders from higher institutions of learning gathered at Nkumba University undergoing a 14-day patriotism training, Todwong stressed the importance of unity in national cohesion which should transcend sectarianism.
He guides that youth should seek to create self-awareness, mentorship, and personal growth other than involving them selves in issues that don’t add value to their personal growth. “Seek serious mentorship, build yourself so that you get the capacity to handle the hardships faced by your community.”
“NRM has a commitment to fostering a culture of patriotism and national unity among Ugandan youth, the reason trainings like these are organised to the benefit your age group and others.” This he says, fosters a sense of national identity transcending regional divisions amd promotes national unity, recognizing Uganda’s diversity as a strength rather than a weakness.
As the rulling party, the NRM has implemented patriotism training programs, targeting youth, student leaders, and other groups programs which he says aim to instill national pride and responsibility, encouraging individuals to contribute positively to Uganda’s development.
“He stresses the importance of emphasizing Ugandan values such as hard work, resilience, and community service, values essential in shaping a patriotic and productive citizenry.
On fostering Economic Nationalism, Todwong asserts that the party has promoted economic nationalism, encouraging Ugandans to support local businesses and industries, an approach that has stimulate economic growth, reduced reliance on foreign aid, and promoted self-sufficiency.
