Toka Beats Arthur and 5 Others To Win The Just Concluded Opinion Polls

Guild Presidential Aspirants

Nkumba University South Sudanese backed guild presidential aspirant, Toka Victor beat his closest contender Arthur Andwineho and 5 others to win the first Opinion polls conducted by Nkumba University News.

The twitter based opinion polls carried out between 15th and 20 October put Toka in the lead with 33% representing 135 votes from the 407 votes cast.

Toka’s lead in the opinion polls has been attributed to his camp’s dynamism in fronting their candidates’s stewardship goal which spark hope for leadership transparency.

NRM’s Arthur Andwineho came in 2nd after registering 18% followed by Ssebina Sharif with 16%.

In 4th place was Daniel Ngirabakunzi at 15% before NUP’s Morris Ssembo trailed with 10%.

Amon Muhwezi and Imran Kigongo got 4% and 3% respectively.

Over 3,000 students are eligible to vote this year having cleared the 20% tuition requirement for registration and eligibility. The number of voters is expected to triple last year’s number.

The stakes are high, the fight for victory has become imminent with probable triumph drawn as competition stiffens among Guild presidential candidates.

From an initial predictions of 12, 7 candidates were cleared to run for guild president, the biggest number since 1994 when the University was eatablished.

Last year, NRM’s Lawrence Mushabe won the guild presidential elections by a meager 195 votes while his opponents Mpanga Tarzan, and NUP’s Joseph Nsereko got 95 and 76 votes respectively.

With a total of 366 recorded in last year’s elections, the opinion poll indicate an increase in the number of voters.

Nkumba University goes to the polls on Saturday 29th October 2022 in highly contested race that seeks to bring Lawrence Mushabe’s tenure to an end.

Elections will be open between 7am and 5pm with one polling stations positioned at school of sciences, adjacent to the football field.

To win, a candidate must garner 51% of the total valid votes. The winner will reign for a year.

Simon Peter Nashonji

Nashonji Simon Peter is a results-driven leader and versatile communications expert with a proven track record of excellence in journalism, public relations, and team management. He holds a Bachelor's degree in Journalism and Public Relations, a Diploma in Journalism, and a Certificate in Counselling Psychology from Nkumba University. Currently, he is pursuing a Master's degree in Public Relations and Strategic Communication at Nkumba University. Nashonji's journalism career spans over five years. With a notable debut at Chimp Reports in 2018, Nashonji has authored and published over 500 articles on business trends, politics, health, sports, and the environment. To hone his craft, he volunteered as Editor of Nkumba University's News Website in 2022, a position he still holds. In 2023, Nashonji was selected among three students to represent Nkumba University at the year-long 2023 Media Challenge Fellowship, where he served as President of the cohort. Same year, he joined the Editorial team of Ubuntu Magazine, a Rotary District 9214 (Uganda and Tanzania) monthly news product. He is currently the Assistant Public Relations Officer at Nkumba University, President, Airforce S.S.S Alumni Association, and at the same time President, Samia Student's Association of Nkumba University. He is also a member of the Board of Governors at Airforce Senior Secondary School, his alma mater. Prior to his current roles, Nashonji accumulated valuable experience in management, having served as Supervisor at Crane Cafeteria (2019-2021), Restaurant General Manager at Pizza Hut Uganda (2016-2017), and Operations Manager at Corinya (U) Ltd (2010-2015). Nashonji also served as President of the Rotaract Club of Rubaga in the 2014-2015 Rotary year. Under his leadership, the club made a significant contribution of $1,000 to the Rotary Foundation. Still in Rotary circles, he played a key role in the establishment of the Rotaract Club of Entebbe Airport in 2012 and the Rotaract Club of Nkumba Stewards in 2015. A native of Buhauli village-Busia District, Nashonji is driven by the adage, "Opportunities multiply as they are seized and only dwindle when neglected."
